Ready, set, draw. Or paint. Or color.

Whatever sparks your creativity, get it ready. The PPL Electric Utilities Electrical Safety Poster Contest officially gets underway Wednesday (3/12) for students in kindergarten through 8th grade in schools served by the utility in central and eastern Pennsylvania.

Grand prize winners in each category will receive $500, and their teachers will receive a $500 classroom grant. The three finalists in each category will each receive $200. Entries must be postmarked no later than April 30. Winners will be announced on or before May 21.

Entries will be grouped into three categories: Grades K-2, grades 3-5 and grades 6-8.

“Nothing is more important than safety, including electrical safety,” said Brian Zickefoose, the utility’s health and safety manager. “This contest is designed to get kids thinking about how to stay safe around electricity at home, school and play. It’s an interesting way to get the message across and to encourage electrical safety discussion at school and at home.”

Zickefoose said statistics show thousands of people across the country are hurt by electrical shocks or burns each year. And each year, about 60 electrocutions are associated with consumer products, according to the Electrical Safety Foundation International.

“Being careful around electricity will help keep students in the classroom and out of the emergency room,” he said.

The National Energy Foundation is assisting PPL Electric Utilities with the contest. NEF already presents the utility’s Think! Energy with E-power energy efficiency programs in schools.
