PPL will conduct the annual test of all the sirens in its Susquehanna nuclear plant emergency notification system Thursday (8/14).

“Testing the sirens helps us ensure the emergency warning system is working properly,” said Joe Scopelliti, PPL Susquehanna’s community relations manager. “The sirens are an important part of our emergency communications system to ask the public to tune into local news stations for information.”

In Thursday’s test, the sirens will sound once for three minutes with a steady tone starting at 11 a.m. The public does not need to respond to this test. After the sirens sound, local Emergency Alert System radio and television stations will carry a message about the test.

“The sirens can be used to notify the community of emergencies, not only at the plant, but for any purpose,” Scopelliti said. “Some of the sirens are shared with local fire companies, which use them for fire calls.”
