Volunteers stuff backpacks full of supplies for distribution to area students
Local efforts are part of LG&E annual school supply event

Backpack Assembly 

Who:   For the 16th year, nearly 100 employees of Louisville Gas and Electric Company will partner with local nonprofit organizations – The Lord’s Kitchen and Feed the City – to assemble and distribute nearly 2,000 backpacks with necessary school supplies. An additional 4,300 backpacks will be made available at various school resource centers and community service organizations in Jefferson County and surrounding areas.

Friday, July 28, Backpack Assembly: Volunteers will begin stuffing backpacks with supplies at 4:30 p.m. at LG&E’s Broadway Office Complex, located at 820 W. Broadway.

Backpack Distribution Events: This year, to best serve those families in need of the supplies, LG&E will deliver backpacks direct to community partners who will each hold their own backpack distributions ahead of the start to the school year. Current plans are as follows:

  • The Lord’s Kitchen – Backpacks will be distributed daily from Wednesday, August 2 until the first day of school, while supplies last. One backpack will be given per child on a first-come, first-served basis. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Supplies can be picked up behind the building located at 1811 Standard Ave.
  • Feed the City – A single day backpack distribution will be held Saturday, Aug. 12 at 1100 S. 26th Street from 11 a.m. until supplies run out. One backpack will be given per child on a first-come, first-served basis. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Event Background

These backpack assembly and distribution events are part of annual companywide backpack distribution efforts organized by LG&E and its sister utility, Kentucky Utilities Company.  Before students return to school, more than 13,000 backpacks will be distributed by employee volunteers and community partners during back-to-school events across Kentucky.
