PPL Electric Utilities encourages IronPigs fans to take a ‘swing’ at reducing energy use
IronPigs’ ‘Go Green Night’ marks the 75th anniversary of first major league baseball night game
Fans of the Lehigh Valley IronPigs will experience more than just a baseball game when they cheer on the home team Monday night (5/24). Visitors to Coca-Cola Park will learn about how they can “go green” by taking advantage of new energy-saving E-power programs from PPL Electric Utilities.
PPL Electric Utilities is the sponsor of Monday’s IronPigs green minibat giveaway. During the game, IronPigs fans will get information about the E-power programs and rebates that could help them save energy and money. The IronPigs green minibats will be given out to the first 2,000 children under the age of 12 in attendance. Adult fans will receive a free compact fluorescent light bulb after the game, courtesy of PPL Electric Utilities.
May 24 marks the 75th anniversary of the first major league baseball night game to be lit by electric lights. In 1935, the Cincinnati Reds hosted the first night game at Crosley Field and defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 2-1.
“This is a great opportunity to celebrate a milestone in America’s national pastime while educating IronPigs fans about saving energy,” said Thomas Stathos, director of Customer Programs and Services for PPL Electric Utilities. “Our E-power programs give customers the ability to use less energy through rebates and incentives that help them better manage their utility costs, not only in the summer months, but also throughout the year.”
With summer just around the corner, here are a few ways that everyone can pitch in to save energy:
- Each degree that you raise the thermostat on your air conditioner saves 2 percent on your electric bill. Set your thermostat at 78 degrees or higher for maximum savings. Using a programmable thermostat can help you manage your temperature settings for maximum efficiency. An E-power rebate is available for qualified programmable thermostats.
- If you are replacing light bulbs, consider using CFLs. They can use up to 75 percent less energy than comparable incandescent bulbs and last up to 10 times longer. PPL Electric Utilities customers now can get significant discounts on ENERGY STAR® qualified CFL bulbs at hundreds of local retail stores.
- Room air conditioners work best when they are not exposed to the sun. Install your air conditioner on the north side of the house or take advantage of shade from trees. PPL Electric Utilities has rebates for ENERGY STAR room air conditioners, as well as other energy-efficient heating and cooling systems.
