PPL crews make progress working under severe conditions; more help on the way to Harrisburg region

Situation: In spite of strong wind gusts and ice clinging to trees and power lines, PPL Electric Utilities workers made major progress in restoring power to customers on Monday (12/17).

Much work remains to be done in the Harrisburg region, the area hardest hit by the ice and wind storm, but crews have restored service to affected customers in several areas and PPL Electric Utilities is now shifting all available resources to the hard hit Harrisburg area.

In addition, another 61 work crews from other utilities will join workers from PPL Electric Utilities on Tuesday, increasing the number of work crews to 269 in the Harrisburg area.

Customers Restored:  111,582 as of 5 a.m.

Customers Without Power:  16,627 as of 5 a.m.

Affected Areas: The Harrisburg region was the hardest hit area and it continues to have the largest number of outages with 14,731.

PPL Electric Utilities has been contacting customers who may be without electricity for an extended period of time, and is arranging to provide ice and water and is working with emergency management agencies to arrange shelter for those who need it.

Cause of Outages: With the heavy buildup of ice and snow, tree limbs fall into power lines, causing them to break and short circuit. Customers should stay away from any downed power lines, treat them as if they were live, and contact PPL at 1-800-342-5775.

Restoration Time: PPL Electric Utilities expects to restore most of the customers currently without power by Tuesday night. Customers within the Harrisburg region may be without electricity until late Wednesday.

Additional Information: Customers with special needs should call PPL Electric Utilities’ toll free number at 1-800-342-5775.
