Youngsters’ Support Will Add a Splash of Colour
Western Power Distribution

Children from St Michael’s Primary School in Treforest got stuck in to some community bulb planting thanks to support from Western Power Distribution.

The British Trust for Conservation Volunteers approached WPD seeking support for this project which they are coordinating as part of the Treforest Wholesome Food Association.

Stephanie Thompson, Cardiff Community Projects Officer for BTCV explains: “We are trying to involve all sectors of the community with this project which includes an allotment area, a Forest School and wildlife area.

The allotment already supplies local restaurants and local people with vegetables but we want to extend the area next to the allotment and involve the local primary school to help with native bulb planting.  By planting a range of wildflowers we can improve the flora on the site.

We will plant a double hedgerow to create a living habitat for wildlife as well as plant a community orchard.  The trees we will be planted by young pupils who are at risk of exclusion from school.

We hope that providing young people with training and employability skills they can leave school with some practical qualifications which may open up a range of opportunities they would not have considered before.”

Tracy Carr commented: “This is an excellent example of how a project can extend across all age ranges in the community and have a positive effect on all those involved.”
