Recycling your old refrigerator or freezer through PPL Electric Utilities’ E-power® appliance recycling program before the end of 2012 could benefit local Scouts.

Until December 30, 2012, PPL EU customers can donate the $35 they would have received for recycling their refrigerator or freezer to the Minsi Trails Council, Boy Scouts of America.

 “We’re excited to be involved in this initiative with the Scouts in the region,” said Maureen Fenerty, a customer program specialist for PPL Electric Utilities who helps manage the appliance recycling program. “The Scouts are spreading the word about the great benefits of appliance recycling, and in return, customers can help them by donating the incentive they would have received for recycling.”

Since the appliance recycling program started in late 2009, more than 40,000 refrigerators have been recycled by PPL Electric Utilities customers. Most of the materials in refrigerators and freezers — about 95 percent — is recycled and not sent to a landfill.
 
Standard appliance eligibility requirements remain in effect for the Minsi Trails effort. Customers who call 1-877-270-3522 or visit pplelectric.com/recycle to schedule their appliance for pickup must indicate whether they want their incentive to go to the Scouts. The Scouts will receive a $35 check about 4 to 6 weeks after the unit is collected.

The Minsi Trails Council serves nearly 17,000 youth in 400 packs, troops and crews through the leadership of 5,500 adult volunteers.  It covers Lehigh, Northampton, Monroe, Carbon and Luzerne counties in Pennsylvania, as well as Warren County, N.J.

“The generosity of the communities in this region has always been vital to our success. We’re glad to be involved with PPL Electric Utilities in this unique effort,” said Minsi Trails Scout Executive Craig Poland. “Recycling old, inefficient appliances saves energy and money, and now it can also help Scouting.”
