PPL Electric Utilities is encouraging teachers to sign up for its free THINK! ENERGY with E-power® summer workshops.

Educators from schools in central and eastern Pennsylvania served by PPL Electric Utilities can enhance their knowledge of sustainable practices with a focus on energy usage and energy efficiency. In turn, that can help both teachers and their students become wiser energy consumers.

The free, full-day workshops are offered in conjunction with the National Energy Foundation. Attendees can earn seven one-hour professional development credits. All the activities are correlated to Pennsylvania Academic Standards for Science/Technology and Environment/Ecology.

“I found the program very helpful for my students. They learned how much electricity many of their standard home appliances, phones and game systems can use,” said Dr. Shelley Herb-Fausey, physics and chemistry teacher at Line Mountain High School in Herndon, Northumberland County.

“It’s useful to truly understand where we all use electricity and it became very clear to me and my students that there are ample opportunities in our daily lives to save on electricity – many of which don’t cost a penny.”

Herb-Fausey is one of about 500 teachers who have attended the summer workshops since the sessions were first offered in 2009.

Workshop topics include understanding phantom load, energy efficiency programs and low-cost or no-cost ways to save on electricity.

Participants receive a binder of activities, instructional posters and supplies to help them integrate energy and sustainability topics into their lesson plans. They also receive a free energy kit containing items including a smart power strip, an LED light bulb and Kill-A-Watt meter.

“These workshops are valuable tools for energy education and we encourage teachers in our service area to take advantage of them. We’d love to fill every available seat,” said PPL Electric Utilities Customer Programs Specialist Natalie Westring.

The THINK! ENERGY teacher workshops are offered at the following locations:

Allentown — July 16 — PPL Electric Utilities’ Walbert Learning Center, Lehigh County
Exeter — July 17 — Wyoming Area Catholic School, Luzerne County
Halifax — July 18 — Halifax Area High School, Dauphin County
Danville — July 23 — PPL Montour Environmental Preserve, Montour County
Allentown — July 24 — PPL Electric Utilities’ Walbert Learning Center, Lehigh County
