A Pembrokeshire man has scooped the title of Apprentice of the Year from his employer Western Power Distribution (WPD).

22 year-old James Griffiths from Scleddau, near Fishguard, won the coveted title for the company’s South Wales region.

He joined WPD in September 2012 as an apprentice Overhead Linesman, and recently completed his training at the company’s Withybush depot. A former pupil of Goodwick Primary and Ysgol Bro Gwaun schools, James is a keen rugby player, and is currently with Fishguard RFC.

WPD Team Manager, Lyn Richards who nominated James explained: “Our apprentice recruitment programme continues to flourish and to produce outstanding nominations for the annual apprentice shield which recognises individuals who have demonstrated high standards in both their practical work and their Technical Apprenticeship Record.
 
“James always set himself targets for completion of his work which he delivered with pride and to a very high standard. He is a genuinely nice guy and always has a smile on his face.”

James received a cash prize of £500 and his name was engraved on WPD’s apprentice shield. He was also presented with a certificate and engraved tankard by company Chief Executive Robert Symons, who congratulated him on his achievement.
