ALLENTOWN, Pa. (Oct. 28, 2019) -- Harrisburg-area PPL Electric Utilities customers came out in force on Oct. 19, dropping off 441 energy guzzling air conditioners and dehumidifiers at the utility’s Recycling Roundup at Harrisburg Area Community College.

“We were thrilled with the response from our customers in the Harrisburg area,” said Mary Ann Merenda, manager of PPL’s residential energy efficiency programs. “These recycling events take working, but inefficient, appliances out of commission, which is a big win for the environment.”

Recycled appliances were sent to a facility that uses state-of-the-art technology to dismantle them safely. Approximately 95 percent of the materials will be salvaged for reuse in making new products, meaning recycled units won’t end up in landfills.

• Steel parts will be used in rails and railroad cars.
• Foam and insulation will be used in various cement products.
• Compressors will be converted into fan motors.
• Plastic components will be used in computers and other products.
• Non-iron components will be used to manufacture motorcycle parts. 

PPL customers who participated in the roundup will receive a $10 check for each working small appliance they recycled during the event. PPL also partnered with Girl Scout Troop 11032 of Hershey for a canned goods drive. Customers who donated two or more canned goods were provided an energy efficiency bag with a pack of LED bulbs.

PPL regularly holds recycling roundups throughout its 29-county territory. Each event is an extension of the utility’s appliance recycling program, which gives customers $35 for recycling old refrigerators or freezers. Units are picked up at no cost to the customer.

“Our appliance recycling program is a favorite among our customers,” said Merenda. “Many of us have old refrigerators or freezers sitting in the garage or basement and we don’t know what to do with them. Through our program, PPL will take those appliances off your hands, and you can rest assured that they will be recycled appropriately.”
