The technology, known as Power Line Communications, could improve the business operations of PPL Electric Utilities and has the potential to revolutionize the delivery of information through the Internet.

In a small-scale feasibility test, PPL Electric Utilities will assess the capability of Power Line Communications technology to transmit and receive high-speed data that could improve utility operations.

"We continually look for ways to improve the efficiency of our operations through the use of new technologies," said Michael E. Bray, president of PPL Electric Utilities.

In addition, he noted, a successful test of this technology could enable PPL Electric Utilities to offer innovative new products and services to customers.

"Our objective is to better understand this emerging technology research and the possible applications that could benefit PPL Electric Utilities customers," Bray said. "If our testing of Power Line Communications proves successful, our electric distribution lines could be used to provide a wide variety of informational uses."

PPL Electric Utilities is testing this technology with a limited number of applications in the Allentown area. The testing phase is expected to continue through the end of 2002.

Headquartered in Allentown, Pa., PPL Corporation (NYSE: PPL) controls nearly 11,500 megawatts of generating capacity in the United States, sells energy in key U.S. markets and delivers electricity to customers in Pennsylvania, the United Kingdom and Latin America.
