PPL's Susquehanna Nuclear Plant to Conduct Graded Emergency Exercise On-line Nuclear Reporter's Notebook Now Available for Media

WHAT: PPL's Susquehanna nuclear power plant near Berwick, Pa., will
conduct a full-scale emergency exercise involving state, county
and municipal emergency management agencies within a 10-mile
radius of the plant.
Media are invited to participate in the exercise by attending
the news briefings at the media operations center. If you plan
to participate, please contact Herb Woodeshick at 570-759-2285
prior to the exercise or come directly to the center during the
exercise.
As part of the exercise, PPL also has produced an on-line
Nuclear Reporter's Notebook to help reporters explain technical
nuclear power issues. The primer includes information on the
Susquehanna plant's history; its design, operations and
emergency plan; as well as basics about radiation.

WHEN/
WHERE: The emergency exercise will begin on 11/2 at approximately
3:00 p.m. and will last several hours. During the exercise, PPL
will conduct several news briefings, including two, half-hour
joint briefings with the Pennsylvania Emergency Management
Agency via satellite at approximately 7:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.

GROUND: U.S. nuclear plants conduct graded, full-scale emergency
exercises every two years. During these exercises, the Nuclear
Regulatory Commission (NRC) evaluates the performance of the
nuclear plant and the Federal Emergency Management Agency
evaluates the performance of the participating state, county and
municipal emergency management agencies.
The NRC previously evaluated PPL's Susquehanna nuclear plant in
1997. Because of changes in NRC procedures and schedules, the
1999 exercise was postponed until this year. The next exercise
will be in 2002 and future exercises will be held in even
numbered years.
The Susquehanna plant, located in Luzerne County about five
miles north of Berwick, is owned jointly by PPL Susquehanna, LLC
and Allegheny Electric Cooperative Inc. and is operated by PPL
Susquehanna.
