Recognizing the broadening scope of financial activities as PPL Corp. (NYSE: PPL) continues to grow in the United States and in selected regions around the world, the company announced Friday (12/15) that John R. Biggar has been named executive vice president and chief financial officer.

Biggar has served as PPL Corporation's senior vice president and chief financial officer since 1998.

"John's financial counsel and innovation have been instrumental in our successful efforts to grow value for our shareowners through selective expansion in key U.S. electricity markets, in Latin America and in the United Kingdom," said William F. Hecht, PPL chairman, president and chief executive officer. "His promotion to executive vice president acknowledges the increased scope of his responsibilities."

A native of Oneida, N.Y., Biggar began his PPL career in 1969 as an attorney in the company's legal department. He also served as manager of Finance and assistant treasurer before being named vice president-Finance in 1984, a position which he held until being named senior vice president and CFO.

Biggar earned a bachelor's degree in Political Science from Lycoming College and a law degree from the College of Law at Syracuse University.

The appointment announced Friday is effective Jan. 1, 2001.

PPL Corp., headquartered in Allentown, Pa., generates electricity at power plants in Pennsylvania, Maine and Montana; markets wholesale or retail energy in 42 U.S. states and Canada; and delivers electricity to nearly 6 million customers in Pennsylvania, in the United Kingdom and in Latin America.

During the third quarter of 2000, PPL's stock price had the third-highest growth rate among stocks in the S&P 500.
