"Energy is fundamental to our quality of life, and is also the lifeblood of business and industry," Governor Martz said.

The 14-member advisory board includes representatives from the energy industry, business leaders and former elected officials.

"I want to thank the governor for this opportunity. I hope this panel will aid the governor in her efforts to find reasonable power solutions for Montana consumers and power producers who supply energy to the state," Petersen said.

Montana's 2001 legislative session is underway, and Martz has publicly stated that energy issues will be one of the most important challenges of this legislative session. PPL Montana operates more than 1,100 megawatts of generating capacity at several hydroelectric and fossil-fuel plants in the state.

In an official memorandum released from the governor's office this week, Martz charged the task force representatives with "advising the governor on energy policy and making recommendations on short-term and long-term solutions to issues concerning the price of electricity paid by Montana citizens."

The panel is scheduled to hold its first meeting within the next couple of weeks.

PPL also is building power plants in Arizona and Washington as part of its effort to expand electricity generation capacity in the Western U.S. market. These plants will add more than 2,000 megawatts to the company's Western capacity. The company also is expanding its operations in the East, with development projects in Connecticut, New York and Pennsylvania.

Headquartered in Allentown, Pa., PPL Corp. markets wholesale or retail energy in 42 U.S. states and Canada; and delivers electricity to nearly 6 million customers in Pennsylvania, in the United Kingdom and in Latin America.
