PPL EnergyPlus and PENCON Foundation Announce Scholarship Winners

ALLENTOWN, Pa.
PPL EnergyPlus LLC and the Pennsylvania Energy Consortium (PENCON) Foundation have funded $18,000 in scholarships to 20 graduating high school seniors from across the state.

The scholarships are being awarded through June by the PENCON Foundation, which is supported by PPL EnergyPlus, the energy marketing arm of PPL Corporation (NYSE: PPL).
Students applying for the scholarships, which range from $500 to $1,500, submitted science projects judged by the PENCON Scholarship Committee and provided three school recommendations. The scholarships are to be used toward full-time, post-secondary education or training.
As part of its commitment to education, PPL EnergyPlus contributes to the PENCON Foundation, which provides money for these scholarships and other educational programs, said Larry De Simone, president of PPL EnergyPlus.
"Support of the PENCON Foundation is a fundamental part of our commitment to help school districts meet more than just their energy needs," De Simone said.
PENCON - one of the largest energy-purchasing groups in Pennsylvania - and PPL EnergyPlus have an energy services agreement that helps school districts contain operational costs by providing energy-efficient heating, cooling and lighting systems and top-to-bottom inspections of energy use in school buildings. Pennsylvania's Energy Savings Act allows schools to pay for these improvements from the savings the projects generate.
"PPL EnergyPlus and PENCON have been partners in the deregulated energy market for years and will continue to work together to provide opportunities for schools to save money and help their students achieve academically," said Jeff Kimball, PENCON's president and co-founder.
He said representatives from school districts across the state regularly attend free expos sponsored by PPL EnergyPlus to learn how to reduce their energy and operational costs and receive information about the work of the PENCON Foundation. PENCON, one of the largest nonprofit energy consortiums in Pennsylvania, has 350 members, primarily schools and school districts.
The scholarship winners are:
Kerry Lynn Handelong, Bangor Area School District (Northampton County); Michael J. Reed, Berwick Area School District (Columbia County); Patricia Lee Rager, Central Cambria School District (Cambria County); Michael Kaufman, Conemaugh Township Area School District (Somerset County); Andrew Hoffmaster and Courtney DeVine, both of Conrad Weiser School District (Berks County); Elisa Sandvik, Forest City Regional School District (Susquehanna County); Daniel Bailey, Greater Nanticoke School District (Luzerne County).
Also, Janine A. Mikulca, Hazleton Area School District (Luzerne County); Nathaniel J. Lewis, Juniata School District (Juniata County); Melissa A. Poremsky and Ryan M. Edinger, both of Milton Area School District (Northumberland County); Levi Blazer, Penns Valley School District (Centre County).
Also, Eric Pennington, Purchase Line School District (Indiana County); Rebecca Gaugler, Selinsgrove Area School District (Snyder County); Paul M. Berry, Shikellamy School District, (Northumberland County); Timothy A. Ditman and Patricia A.
