Delaware Valley College of Doylestown, Pa., has signed an energy-services agreement with PPL EnergyPlus that is expected to save the school nearly $2 million over the next 10 years.

The agreement will help the college reduce energy use and maintain mechanical systems, such as heating and air conditioning, in campus buildings.

In addition to providing energy services to the suburban Philadelphia college, PPL EnergyPlus also supplies the electricity that powers its classrooms, laboratories, dormitories and other facilities on the 80-acre campus.

"The ability to integrate energy supply with energy services in ways that meet specific customer needs is something that sets PPL EnergyPlus apart from other suppliers in Pennsylvania's competitive energy market," said Larry De Simone, president of PPL EnergyPlus.

"Our integrated mechanical and energy service capabilities enable PPL EnergyPlus to develop long-term relationships with customers and quickly respond to their changing requirements with creative solutions," he added.

Earlier this year, PPL EnergyPlus completed a detailed energy audit of the campus. The audit report documented ways the college could conserve energy, reduce water use and cut its utility-related costs.

Under the energy-services contract, PPL EnergyPlus - through its PPL Spectrum and Burns Mechanical subsidiaries - will complete projects identified in the audit. They include new energy-efficient lighting, automated building control systems, heating and air conditioning improvements and new windows that reduce heat loss.

Through a financing tool known as "energy performance contracting," the cost of the improvements is paid through savings on the college's energy bills. Those savings are guaranteed by PPL EnergyPlus, which will continue long after the college has fully recovered the cost of the improvements.

"Energy performance contracting is a great tool for school districts, colleges and universities," De Simone said. "It's a way we can help them complete projects that improve energy efficiency and reduce energy use without taking a single dollar from their budget for educational programs."

College President Dr. Thomas Leamer said he is excited about the project and by what PPL EnergyPlus can do for Delaware Valley College.

"Working with PPL EnergyPlus is a significant, positive step for us. It allows us to make improvements to our physical plant without negatively affecting our operating budget," he said. "This project also permits us to pursue needed additional deferred maintenance projects in the future."

After the improvements are in place, PPL's Burns Mechanical, a Horsham, Pa.-based mechanical contracting and engineering firm, will provide maintenance services to the college until 2010.

"We look for ways to use all of our capabilities to benefit customers. In this case, we were able to provide energy-management services and mechanical contracting. For other customers, we have GenSelect(SM), our new on-site generation program that offers options from diesel generators to cutting-edge microturbines to meet a whole range of customer needs," De Simone said.

Delaware Valley College is a four-year, coeducational college with more than 1,400 students enrolled in more than 35 academic programs, ranging from agricultural, biological and physical sciences, to business administration, computer information systems and secondary education.
