ALLENTOWN, Pa.

William F. Hecht, chairman, president and chief executive officer of PPL Corporation (NYSE: PPL), Friday (12/19) announced a realignment that further strengthens and broadens the company's executive management team.

As part of the realignment, James H. Miller is being named executive vice president with responsibility for PPL's electricity marketing and generation companies. He becomes the company's third executive vice president, joining Lawrence E. De Simone and John R. Biggar.

"PPL has been one of the most successful U.S. electricity companies over the past several years because we have taken a disciplined, operationally focused and cost-effective approach to growing the company," said Hecht. "The new organization we announce today broadens our talented executive management team and further sharpens our focus on producing the results that have led to solid, long-term growth for PPL's shareowners."

Under the new alignment, Miller will have responsibility for PPL Generation, the company that controls more than 11,500 megawatts of electricity generation in the United States, and for PPL EnergyPlus, which markets electricity and natural gas to retail and wholesale customers. Miller, who has served as president of PPL Generation since 2001, will continue in that role.

De Simone is continuing as executive vice president with responsibility for PPL Electric Utilities and PPL Global, companies that provide electricity distribution services to 5.5 million customers in the United States, the United Kingdom and Latin America. De Simone also will be responsible for the company's information services, human resources and communications functions as well as PPL Telcom, a subsidiary that markets excess capacity on PPL's internal fiber-optic network. Previously, De Simone had responsibility for PPL Generation and PPL EnergyPlus.

Biggar, executive vice president and chief financial officer, continues in the position he has held since January 2001.

The three executive vice presidents, along with Robert J. Grey, senior vice president and general counsel, will report directly to Hecht. The three executive vice presidents, Hecht and Grey will make up the company's executive management team.

"As a result of these changes, all of the company's operational units will report to two experienced and talented executive vice presidents, who will provide both strategic direction for these businesses as well as day-to-day profit-and-loss oversight," said Hecht.

Hecht said PPL continues to focus on domestic electricity generation and marketing and electricity delivery in select domestic and international markets.

The changes are effective Jan. 1, 2004, Hecht said.

Before joining PPL, Miller, 55, was executive vice president of USEC Inc., an international supplier of enriched uranium to nuclear utilities. Previously, Miller was president of ABB Environmental Systems, a worldwide leader in the supply of air pollution control equipment for the power industry, and ABB Resource Recovery Systems, which specializes in the design, construction and operation of waste-to-energy plants. Miller also served as president of UC Operating Services, an unregulated subsidiary of Constellation Energy and Louisville Gas and Electric Co.

He began his career in the electricity industry at the former Delmarva Power & Light Co., where he held various engineering and management positions. Miller received his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the University of Delaware. He also served in the U. S. Navy nuclear submarine program.

De Simone, 56, who joined PPL in November 1998 as president of PPL EnergyPlus, became executive vice president in 2001.

Before coming to PPL, he was senior vice president-Energy Services for Virginia Power Co. Prior to that, he served as president of Central & South West Corp.'s energy services and telecommunications operations and as its vice president for strategic planning.

Earlier in his career, he was a partner with Scott, Madden and Associates, an Atlanta-based utilities consulting firm, and a senior vice president with Energy Management Associates, an Atlanta computer software company that developed programs for utilities.

De Simone also served as manager of strategic planning for San Diego Gas & Electric Co. and as supervisor of energy economic research for Pacific Gas & Electric Co. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics from Claremont McKenna College in California and a Ph.D. in business administration from the University of California at Berkeley.
