Unit 1 at PPL's Susquehanna nuclear power plant in Luzerne County, Pa., resumed generating electricity for the regional power grid Wednesday (11/29) after a brief outage.

The Unit 1 reactor shut down safely Saturday (11/25) because of a problem with a 230,000-volt power line in the region's electric transmission grid. Equipment failed on the power line, which carries electricity generated by Unit 1.

"Protective equipment for the generator, a non-nuclear part of the plant, reacted to the problem on the transmission grid and worked as designed to protect the generator by shutting down the unit automatically," said Robert A. Saccone, vice president of Nuclear Operations for PPL Susquehanna.

Plant workers did a thorough evaluation of equipment on Unit 1 and determined that the unit could be safely restarted and reconnected to the grid.

Susquehanna Unit 2 is connected to a different transmission line and continues to operate at full power.

The Susquehanna plant, located about seven miles north of Berwick, is jointly owned by PPL Susquehanna LLC and Allegheny Electric Cooperative, and is operated by PPL Susquehanna.
