PPL Electric Utilities recognized for contribution to Harrisburg college’s public safety project

PPL Electric Utilities was recognized recently for its financial support of the expansion of the Sen. John J. Shumaker Public Safety Center at Harrisburg Area Community College.

The company gave $25,000 toward the first phase of a 20-year expansion and renovation of the center, which serves as a premier training site for first responders and health care workers throughout the Harrisburg region.

Donald M. Bernhard, manager of Community and Economic Development for PPL, said the donation is part of the company’s ongoing support of the college’s great work on behalf of the residents of the region.

“PPL has a long history of partnering with the communities it serves,” said Bernhard. “We are committed to empowering economic vitality and quality of life across our service territory in central and eastern Pennsylvania. The first responders who train here certainly are critical to all of us and are there when we need them. We’re grateful for all that they do.”

PPL is a previous contributor toward HACC projects, including a $25,000 gift toward the construction of the Select Medical Health and Education Center in 2006 and a $25,000 gift toward the Midtown 2 project in 2007.

Nancy Rockey, HACC vice president of college and community development and interim vice president of the Harrisburg Campus, said PPL exemplified the “power of the partnership” and was always willing to help HACC.

The first phase of the expansion, targeted for completion by summer 2012 at an estimated cost of $15 million, focuses on remedies to areas in need of immediate attention, including renovation of the six-story fire training tower, smoke structure and burn building; construction of a new law enforcement complex including state-of-the-art, 25-lane indoor firing range and will achieve a Silver LEED rating; an expanded parking lot; and additional training sites for Hazmat and other emergency situations.

A classroom in the new law enforcement complex will be named in PPL Electric Utilities’ honor.

PPL Electric Utilities, a subsidiary of PPL Corporation (NYSE: PPL), provides electric delivery services to about 1.4 million customers in Pennsylvania and has consistently ranked among the best companies for customer service in the United States.
