PPL Electric Utilities urges education, awareness

May is National Electrical Safety Month, and PPL Electric Utilities joins the safety awareness campaign begun by the Electrical Safety Foundation International that aims to educate people about steps to prevent electrical fires, injuries, and fatalities in the home and workplace.

As an electric utility, promoting safety is the top priority for PPL Electric Utilities with its employees in the office and out in the field, as well as contractors and the public. Part of the safety campaign is educating the public about common electrical hazards and staying safe around utility electrical facilities.

A few years ago, PPL Electric Utilities became the first electric utility in the country to qualify for Star status with all of its field worksites meeting the rigorous standards of the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s Voluntary Protection Program.

“Regardless of age or experience, National Electrical Safety Month is a time for all of us at home and at work to become more aware of our surroundings and steps we can take to protect ourselves and know what to do when accidents happen,” said John Yanek, PPL’s senior director of safety operations.

Whether you are a child, an adult or a teacher, you can benefit from PPL’s Electrical Safety World Web site. At www.pplesw.com, you’ll find games, experiments, tips and other helpful resources to stay safe indoors and outdoors. A basic safety checklist highlights the proper use of electrical outlets and extension cords; ground-fault circuit interrupters in areas near water, trees and power lines; and working outdoors with ladders around overhead power lines.

National Electrical Safety Month focuses on four themes: 1) renovating the right way; 2) staying safe at work; 3) educating your children; and 4) remembering electric safety in the field.

The Electrical Safety Foundation offers an electrical safety workbook to conduct a basic electrical safety audit of your home, a basic office safety checklist, a kid’s corner, and a “never assume electrical safety” series for the workplace. From job planning to arc flash awareness, a new one-of-a-kind video program is a must for anyone working with or near electricity. The National Electrical Safety Month campaign toolkit can be downloaded on the foundation’s Web site at www.esfi.org.

The Electrical Safety Foundation International proudly sponsors National Electrical Safety Month each May and engages in public education campaigns throughout the year to prevent electrical fires, injuries, and fatalities in the home and the workplace.
