PPL Electric Utilities Making System Improvements to Better Service in Southern Luzerne County
PPL Electric Utilities

PPL Electric Utilities customers in southern Luzerne County should experience more reliable power service following the completion of a $370,000 upgrade project next year.

Beginning in January, the utility will rebuild about two miles of aerial distribution line connecting two local substations in Hazle Township. The project will benefit about 4,000 customers.

Also, system switches will be installed that can be remotely operated from PPL Electric Utilities’ system operation center. These automated devices will allow operators to isolate trouble in the local area, such as a vehicle accident, equipment malfunction, or downed trees on overhead lines, and reconfigure power flow to reduce the number and duration of outages.

“We’re always looking at our operations and reliability performance to identify where we need to invest and make system improvements. We’re pleased to move forward with this project that will make a difference in the quality of service for customers in this area,” said Frank Gaida, regional operations director, PPL Electric Utilities.

The project is part of the utility’s greatly expanded capital investment program to strengthen, upgrade and modernize the electric delivery system, funded with $450 million this year and $3.4 billion over five years.
