Lake Aldred Level to be Lowered for Work at Holtwood Dam
PPL Holtwood

Lake Aldred water levels will be temporarily lowered on Thursday (12/22) and Friday (12/23) to allow for maintenance at PPL’s Holtwood hydroelectric plant. While the work will not affect recreational activities on the lake, boaters are asked to observe the information posted at PPL’s  Pequea and York Furnace boat ramps.

The maintenance work will involve replacing or repairing flashboards, large wooden boards used to raise the elevation of water held back by the dam. The boards, fixed to steel pins atop the concrete dam, make the Holtwood hydroelectric plant — a source of clean, renewable energy for more than a century — more productive and efficient, and raise the level of Lake Aldred for boating.

Lake Aldred is an 8-mile-long body of water formed by the Holtwood Dam and hydroelectric plant on the lower Susquehanna River. PPL owns and operates the dam and recreational facilities on both sides of the lake, including the boat ramps at Pequea and York Furnace.

PPL Corporation, headquartered in Allentown, Pa., owns or controls about 19,000 megawatts of generating capacity in the United States, sells energy in key U.S. markets, and delivers electricity and natural gas to about 10 million customers in the United States and the United Kingdom.
