PPL Foundation announced today that it is expanding its mission and focus to more directly support racial justice and equity initiatives in the communities it serves.

To demonstrate this commitment, the foundation announced a combined $100,000 in initial contributions to local organizations focused on confronting racism and injustice.

“While issues such as diversity and inclusion have always been key considerations in the choices our foundation makes to invest in local communities, it is clear, now more than ever, that more must be done to advance social justice and equity and encourage constructive dialogue around racism and discrimination,” said Ryan Hill, president of PPL Foundation.

“Toward that end, we have made ‘diversity, equity and inclusion’ one of the key focus areas of our foundation moving forward, and we will seek future opportunities and proposals through our grant programs to fund worthwhile initiatives aimed at delivering real and lasting change in these areas,” said Hill.

PPL Foundation will initially contribute a combined $100,000 to support the United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley’s Fund for Racial Justice and Equity, Community Action Committee of the Lehigh Valley’s Color Outside the Lines initiative and NAACP chapters in Harrisburg, Lancaster and Wilkes-Barre.

Future efforts will include a focus on supporting minority-led organizations leading change in local communities.

Each year, PPL Foundation contributes more than $3 million to a wide variety of nonprofit organizations in eastern and central Pennsylvania. In addition to its new focus area, the foundation seeks to expand educational opportunities, including early childhood education, STEM programs and literacy initiatives. In addition, it focuses on investing in safe, strong and sustainable communities, including disaster preparedness, environmental conservation and neighborhood improvement programs.
