Employees and Families Lend a Hand during the Eighth Annual Day of Caring
More than 150 LG&E and KU volunteers will participate across the state

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Louisville Gas and Electric and Kentucky Utilities employees and families will roll up their sleeves in their local communities as a part of the eighth annual Day of Caring.

More than 150 employees and families will assist nonprofit agencies at seven locations with tasks like painting, mulching, cleaning up debris, building walkways and even building and remodeling homes.

"LG&E and KU employees are committed to improving the quality of life in the communities where they live and work," said Chris Whelan, vice president of Communications for LG&E and KU. "The Day of Caring gives our employees another opportunity to help organizations that might not have the resources to accomplish the tasks our volunteers plan to tackle on Saturday."

The Day of Caring, which is a main event of LG&E's and KU's annual employee giving campaign, brings together employees from different parts of the business across the service territories to work on a single project.

In Louisville, volunteers will assist Farnsley-Moremen Landing and Sun Valley Park with painting, mulching and clean-up.

In Lexington, volunteers will assist Habitat for Humanity in building and remodeling homes for low-income families.

Volunteers will also work on projects in the Elizabethtown, Carrollton, Danville and Greenville areas.

Since 2005, the companies' annual employee giving campaign, called the Power of One, has raised nearly $11 million to support hundreds of nonprofit organizations throughout the LG&E and KU service territories.

In 2011, employees contributed more than $1million to the campaign — marking the fifth annual year employee donations have surpassed the $1 million milestone. And, nearly 70 percent of LG&E and KU employees participate in the companies' campaign through payroll deductions — a participation rate more than twice the national average for employee participation in charitable giving.
