LG&E, Nonprofit Partners Hold 11th Annual School Supply Drive
Thousands of students will return to school this year with new supplies and backpacks

(Louisville, Ky.) — As the summer comes to an end and students get ready to return to school, thousands of children in Louisville will be able to head back to school again with new supplies and backpacks.

For the 11th year, LG&E employee volunteers are partnering with nonprofit organizations, the Lord's Kitchen and Feed the City, to assemble 3,200 backpacks filled with basic school supplies.

The backpacks will be assembled with paper, pocket folders, glue sticks, pencils and other supplies on Friday, Aug. 17, starting at 4 p.m. in the lower level of LG&E's Broadway Office Complex, located at 820 W. Broadway.

On Saturday, Aug. 18, backpacks will be distributed from a designated area in the parking lot of LG&E's Broadway Office Complex from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., or while supplies last. Supplies will be distributed one backpack per child on a first-come, first-served basis. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

In the first year of the effort, LG&E partnered with The Lord's Kitchen to deliver 300 school supply kits for children in five Louisville neighborhoods. This year, 3,200 filled backpacks will be distributed at LG&E's Broadway Office Complex on Aug. 18, and an additional 800 backpacks will be made available at various Jefferson County Public School resource centers.

The Louisville distribution is part of LG&E and Kentucky Utilities' larger school supply drive across the utilities' service territories. In total, more than 14,000 filled backpacks will be distributed during back-to-school events organized by employee volunteers benefiting students in Louisville, Lexington, Fern Creek, Mt. Washington, Harrodsburg and Bullitt, Meade, Muhlenberg, Lyon, Ohio, Carroll and Muhlenberg Counties.
