Representatives from area businesses deliver dozens of backpacks to Salem Elementary School in Berwick, Pa., one of the many schools benefiting from the donation drive.

Local businesses and organizations have teamed up to gather school supplies to give children a strong start in their first days back at school.

Several businesses participated for the first time during this year’s annual communitywide backpack donation drive and helped spur the total donation of nearly 500 backpacks to private and public schools and philanthropic organizations in the Berwick, Bloomsburg, and Danville areas. Backpacks will be given to children who qualify for free and reduced lunches at the schools.

“The generosity of the many businesses and their employees who donate to the cause is a testament to the commitment we have to giving children a boost toward success at school,” said Ginny Crake, chief executive officer of the Berwick Area United Way who helps organize the drive along with the Women in Nuclear group at the Susquehanna power plant.

“We appreciate all those new businesses and organizations who have stepped in this year to significantly increase the number of backpacks collected,” Crake said. “We also appreciate the generosity of Gallagher Student TransportationCompany for helping us assemble the packs and drop them off at the schools.”

The donation drive was supported by the following businesses and organizations:
