LOUISVILLE, Ky. — In the wake of Hurricane Sandy's path, millions of people are expected to be without power after heavy rain and winds lash the northeast coast.

Saturday morning, KU and LG&E sent more than 300 employees and contractors to assist our sister company in Pennsylvania, PPL Electric Utilities. They were expected to be in place in eastern Pennsylvania as Sandy came on shore, so they could join PPL crews with restoration once the storm passes.

The full set of resources includes line technicians, team leaders, safety specialists and tree trimmers. These efforts are a result of KU and LG&E's participation in nationwide mutual assistance organizations, in which a collection of utility companies assist other utilities in times of natural disasters and crisis situations.

"We're committed to helping PPL Electric Utilities restore power as quickly and safely as possible," said David Guy, Director of System Restoration and Dispatch Operations for LG&E and KU. "Before committing our crews to the east coast we made sure there were ample resources on hand for anything from routine maintenance to emergency situations." KU and LG&E pulled small numbers of resources from across the state so it didn't pull too many from any one area. To help put this into perspective, KU and LG&E covers more than 90 counties and it has 44 operations centers.

Crews will continue to restore power until they are no longer needed and as long as weather patterns remain calm in KU and LG&E service territory.
