LG&E and KU Volunteers Roll Up Their Sleeves for Ninth Annual Day of Caring
Volunteers will do a variety of work at different locations across the state
Our Day of Caring is designed to give all of us an opportunity to assist nonprofits by performing much needed tasks that might otherwise go undone without our help.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Employees and families of Louisville Gas and Electric Company and Kentucky Utilities Company will lend a hand to their local communities as part of the utilities' ninth annual Day of Caring.

Volunteer activities will take place in Louisville, Lexington and Middlesboro this Saturday, June 15, and in Morganfield on June 29.

In total, more than 220 employee volunteers and family members will participate in Day of Caring and assist 14 nonprofit agencies located in: Louisville, Lexington, Elizabethtown, Middlesboro, Morganfield, Richmond, Shelbyville, Somerset, Mercer County, Trimble County and Norton, Va.

Volunteers will perform a variety of on-site tasks such as painting, mulching, assembling toiletries and cleaning up the banks of the Ohio River. Other volunteers are collecting nonperishable items at their local facilities for donation.

"LG&E and KU employees are committed to improving the quality of life in the communities in which we live and work," said Laura Douglas, vice president of Corporate Responsibility and Community Affairs. "Our Day of Caring is designed to give all of us an opportunity to assist nonprofits by performing much needed tasks that might otherwise go undone without our help."

The Day of Caring is part of the LG&E and KU annual employee giving campaign called Power of One, which includes monetary giving and volunteer work. As one of the campaign's main events, Day of Caring brings together employees from different departments across the utilities, to work together on single projects.

Volunteers also will work on Saturday, June 29, in Morganfield for Union County YMCA's "Healthy Kids Day." They will assemble goody bags filled with items such as jump ropes, Frisbees, chalk and outside sports equipment.

Since 2005, more than 2,200 employees and family members have put in nearly 9,000 man-hours at 58 locations across the state. The utilities' Power of One also has raised nearly $11 million in that time to support hundreds of nonprofit organizations throughout the LG&E and KU service territories.

Nearly 70 percent of LG&E and KU employees participate in Power of One through payroll deduction — a participation rate more than twice the national average.
