LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Employees at the E. W. Brown and Ghent plants have reason to celebrate. Plant employees have received the prestigious Kentucky Governor's Health and Safety Award for outstanding safety performance. Brown employees won the award for working 4,144,448 hours without a lost-time incident, the last of which occurred in February 1997. Ghent employees won the award for working 1,272,552 hours and have since hit the 1.4-million-hour mark. Their last lost-time injury was in December 2009.

The exemplary safety performance for employees at both plants is an outstanding achievement, considering the hazards associated with planned- and unplanned-outage work on the generating units, the extreme demands of summer generation in past years, and major construction underway at the facilities.

"Our employees have embraced the fact that they need to think about every task to ensure they've identified anything that could go wrong and hurt someone," said Jeff Fraley, general manager at E.W. Brown/Tyrone. "The key is they are the ones responsible, and unless they do the thinking, no safety program is going to keep them safe. That learned behavior is a tribute to them, and they deserve this award."

Ricky Moore, Ghent's health and safety specialist, agrees. "Our employees are very committed to working safely one day at a time and going home uninjured," he said. "In addition, our front-line supervisors do an excellent job preparing employees for work each day by performing good pre-job briefings, setting the right example and checking on their crews."

Plant representatives received the awards in May during the annual Governor's Health and Safety Conference in Louisville. The event brought together nearly 1,000 safety professionals from across the commonwealth who focus on eliminating occupational injuries and illness.

During the event, 45 awards were presented to a variety of companies, including three to PIC Group Inc., for outstanding safety performance at Ghent, Cane Run and Brown. PIC, a generation-services contractor for LG&E and KU, exemplifies the safety commitment of the company's business partners, which is influenced by the leadership of our employees.
