Water Levels of Lake Aldred to Be Lowered for Inspection at Holtwood Dam
PPL Generation

Operators at PPL’s Holtwood hydroelectric plant will lower water levels of Lake Aldred from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday (6/25) to allow for an underwater inspection of the expansion project.

Lake levels will be lowered to an elevation of 164.5 feet so divers can perform the underwater survey. The lake will be returned to normal levels by 11 p.m. Tuesday.

Drawdown notifications will be posted at PPL’s Pequea and York Furnace boat launches on Lake Aldred. Boaters should use caution because of shallow water.

The $440 million Holtwood expansion project, which began in 2010, is one of the largest hydroelectric expansions in the country. PPL Holtwood is adding 125 megawatts of low-impact, renewable and environmentally friendly electric generating capacity at its plant, which has been generating electricity since 1910. The Holtwood project will add enough renewable energy to power 100,000 typical homes.

Lake Aldred is an 8-mile-long body of water formed by the Holtwood Dam and hydroelectric plant on the lower Susquehanna River. PPL owns and operates the dam and recreational facilities on both sides of the lake.
