Teachers who need professional development credits still have time to earn them while enjoying a fact-filled program about energy topics this summer at the Susquehanna Energy Information Center in Berwick, Pa. The Nuclear Energy Seminar for Teachers will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 28 through Aug. 1.

This popular 5-day course provides teachers of grades K-12 with objective, up-to-date information about energy-related issues, the safe and secure operation of PPL’s Susquehanna nuclear power plant and the use of nuclear isotopes in other industries.

Experts from the Susquehanna power plant, Bloomsburg University and other organizations provide hands-on activities and experiments that can be easily transferred to your classroom. Field trips to various venues like Susquehanna’s control room simulator, emergency operations center and environmental lab demonstrate the real-life use of the concepts covered.

“Sharing real-life examples of how science is used every day in a major industry will engage students and encourage them to think about their role in shaping our energy future,” said Mimi Mylin, senior information specialist for PPL.

David Simpson, associate professor from Bloomsburg University, will help teach much of the course. Participants in the course also will meet a number of industry experts, including David Allard, the director of the state Bureau of Radiation Protection; Brian Mangan, King’s College professor of environmental studies; and many professionals from Susquehanna.

Educators will earn three continuing professional development credits, processed through the Northeast Intermediate Unit for a fee of $60. The course itself is free.

The Susquehanna plant, located in Luzerne County about seven miles north of Berwick, is owned jointly by PPL Susquehanna LLC and Allegheny Electric Cooperative Inc. and is operated by PPL Susquehanna.
