How You Can Handle Outage Recovery Following Severe Weather

(LOUISVILLE, Ky.) — September is National Preparedness Month, and Louisville Gas and Electric and Kentucky Utilities Company offer four proactive steps to take in advance of and following severe weather.

  • Make a kit — Having an emergency preparedness kit ready in advance for each member of the family can help make responding to an emergency less stressful and more organized. In addition, consider carrying a kit in the trunk of a vehicle for emergencies. Visit ready.gov to find a list of suggested items to include, such as a first-aid kit, crank-powered flashlights, whistles, batteries, prescription medicines, blankets, bottled water, can opener, cash and a weather radio.

  • Keep informed — During outage situations, LG&E and KU provide near real-time outage information through the utilities’ automated phone system, online outage map and outage map app through a variety of mobile devices.

  • Tell LG&E and KU about it — Reporting downed power lines, hazardous conditions and power outages immediately can help the utilities more quickly isolate areas impacted during severe weather. KU customers should call 1-800-981-0600. Speed dial "1-1-2" to quickly navigate through the automated phone system and report the situation. Follow us on Twitter and Facebook for information updates.

  • Safety comes first — Always assume any downed wire is an energized power line. Stay away from the area and report it immediately.
