PPL Electric Utilities Customers Purchase 1 Million Discounted LEDs

PPL Electric Utilities customers have purchased 1 million discounted LED light bulbs since 2013, saving about 550 million kilowatt-hours per year – enough to power about 50,000 homes.
LEDs use up to 75 percent less energy than incandescent bulbs and can last up to 20 times longer. LEDs can help customers save about $135 over the life of each bulb.

“We want to help our customers save energy and money, and one way we do that is by providing discounts on the latest energy-saving technologies, like LEDs,” said Pete Cleff, manager of the utility’s energy efficiency programs. “This milestone is a testament to the steps our customers have taken to become more energy-efficient.”

LEDs are ideal to install in the light fixtures that customers use the most, Cleff said. PPL Electric Utilities customers can get instant discounts on specially marked LEDs at participating stores. The discount is taken automatically at the register. Customers can visit pplelectric.com/lighting to find a retailer near them. Income-eligible customers can get LEDs, along with other energy-saving items, at no cost by visiting www.ppleasysavings.com.

PPL Electric Utilities has offered customers discounts on energy-efficient light bulbs for years. Prior to offering discounted LEDs, customers could buy discounted compact fluorescent light bulbs. Customers installed nearly 10 million CFLs from 2009 to 2013. In total, PPL Electric Utilities customers are saving about 570 million kilowatt-hours annually from light bulbs.

Lighting is just one of the programs that PPL Electric Utilities offers to help customers save energy and money. There are rebates available on central air conditioners, whole-house fans, heat pumps, pool pumps, insulation and more. Customers can also recycle an old refrigerator or freezer and receive $35.

“If customers aren’t sure where they should start, we provide rebates on comprehensive home energy audits to customers with electric heat or central air conditioning,” Cleff said. “The auditor will conduct diagnostic testing on the home including air leakage, moisture, carbon monoxide levels and more.”
