Tower disappears in £400,000 initiative
Western Power Distribution

Residents from Chiltern Drive in Willenhall near Wolverhampton gathered to watch as a 114 foot steel tower was dismantled.

The tower, which formed part of a circuit bringing electricity to around 13,000 homes and businesses in the area, was decommissioned after its cables were placed underground. It had stood on the spot since 1966.

Electricity distributor Western Power Distribution (WPD) has invested £400,000 to improve the power network in the area, and employed specialist contractors to carry out the work.

As well as improving the view for the Chiltern Drive residents, the new section of cable will help to further safeguard supply reliability to customers in the Wolverhampton area into the foreseeable future.

“It ensures that we can provide a high level of service to these areas in the long term by improving the infrastructure and security of our electricity network,” said Nigel Morrey, WPD Projects Team Manager for the area.

Work to dismantle the tower is due to be completed this week and the area where the tower once stood will be tidied and landscaped over the next couple of weeks.
