WPD invests more than $13 million in new Birmingham depot

Western Power Distribution (WPD) has invested more than $13 million (£10m) in a new state-of-the-art depot in Birmingham.

The new facility replaces the existing depots at Warstock Road and Summer Lane and for the first time means all 220 staff who work in Birmingham will be based at a single depot.

Formerly a bus depot, the site has been carefully chosen to be within easy reach of motorways and A roads but outside the city’s most congested areas so WPD engineers can get to sites as quickly as possible in the event of a fault, which will improve restoration times for customers.

Kester Jones, Distribution Manager for Birmingham, is delighted with the new site, saying: “The new modern depot will enable us to operate more efficiently and effectively and better serve the customers of the UK’s second city now and into the future.”

The site at Warstock Road is in the process of being sold to a developer, subject to planning permission being granted for a change of use, while the Summer Lane depot will revert to being a 132:11kV primary substation.
