ALLENTOWN, Pa. (May 30, 2019) – Seven high school seniors were recently selected as winners of the inaugural PPL Electric Utilities Future Environmental Leaders Scholarship.

Each will receive $2,000 toward their studies at schools ranging from the University of Cincinnati and State University of New York (SUNY) to colleges in Pennsylvania’s university system, including Shippensburg, Bloomsburg and Mansfield.

PPL introduced its Future Environmental Leaders Scholarship this year to assist high school seniors within its service area in pursuing an environmentally-related career. About 400 applications were received. PPL divided its service territory into seven geographic regions and selected one winner from each region.

Following are this year’s winners, their chosen colleges and majors:

• (Northampton, Lehigh, Bucks and Montgomery counties) — McKenzie Hagenbuch, Southern Lehigh H.S.; SUNY ESF, Wildlife Sciences

• (Carbon, Schuylkill and Luzeren counties) — Emily Ferraro, Williams Valley H.S.; Shippensburg University of PA, Ecology/Environmental Biology

• (Dauphin, York and Cumberland counties) — Laura Hunsberger, Susquehanna Township H.S.; Mansfield Univerity of PA, Environmenal Biology

• (Lancaster and Berks counties) — William J. Burke III, Penn Manor H.S.; Penn State, Energy Engineering

• (Lackawanna, Monroe, Pike, Wayne, Susquehanna and Wyoming counties) — Tyler Wirth, Wallenpaupack Area H.S.; University of Cincinnati, Architectural Engineering

• (Union, Snyder, Juniata, Perry and Northumberland counties) — Daniel Campbell, Greenwood H.S.; Bloomsburg University of PA, Environmental Science

• (Clinton, Lycoming, Columbia and Montour counties) — Mackenzie Fish, Central Columbia H.S.; Bloomsburg University of PA, Wildlife and Fisheries Science.

As part of the scholarship application, students were required to write a short essay on why they were pursuing an environmentally-related field.
