ALLENTOWN, Pa.

PPL Corporation (NYSE: PPL) today (6/19) dedicated The Plaza at PPL Center, a new office building that will accommodate continued growth in the company's non-regulated energy businesses.

Designed by world-renowned architect Robert A.M. Stern of New York, the building also is a showcase of environmental features that save energy and water, minimize the impact on the environment and make the building a friendly and healthy place to work.

The building features an open center atrium and plant-filled "winter gardens" inside the glass facade. Another notable feature of the complex is the three-quarter-acre public plaza along Hamilton Street.

The Plaza at PPL Center houses about 600 PPL employees working for the company's non-regulated subsidiaries. They are: PPL Generation, including support operations for PPL's Susquehanna nuclear plant; PPL EnergyPlus, the company's competitive wholesale trading and marketing operation; PPL Energy Services, including the headquarters section of the company's various mechanical contracting companies; PPL Global, which oversees the company's electric delivery operations in El Salvador, Bolivia, Chile and the United Kingdom; and PPL Telcom.

Revenues for PPL's non-regulated businesses have grown from $143 million in 1998 to $2.7 billion in 2002.

PPL Electric Utilities, the former Pennsylvania Power & Light Co., will not occupy the new building. The company's Pennsylvania electric delivery operation will continue to be housed in other buildings in the Allentown General Office complex.

For the dedication of The Plaza at PPL Center, the street plaza was transformed into a community block party, complete with free ice cream and hot dogs, and featuring a free public concert by two-time Grammy award winner Chuck Mangione. About 1,000 people attended.

William F. Hecht, PPL chairman, president and chief executive officer, called the building the result of an "exceptional collaboration" between PPL, the project's developer, the architect, the City of Allentown, the Allentown Economic Development Corporation, Pennsylvania state government and state Sen. Charlie Dent (R-Allentown).

An important part of the collaboration was Pennsylvania's Keystone Opportunity Zone program, which encourages development in areas that would benefit from revitalization.

The property was developed by Liberty Property Trust of Philadelphia, which has developed 50 million square feet of office space in the mid- Atlantic, Southeastern and Midwestern states. Additional retail and office space in the building is being offered for lease by Liberty.

"Thanks to this collaboration, we have a work of art that stands not only as a tribute to commerce and business success, but as a lasting symbol of our optimism for the future of downtown Allentown," Hecht said.

Hecht announced that PPL will make a donation to the Allentown Arts Walk to honor the memory of Willard Rouse, Liberty's founder. Rouse passed away on May 27.

PPL Corporation, headquartered in Allentown, Pa., controls about 11,500 megawatts of generating capacity in the United States, sells energy in key U.S. markets and delivers electricity to customers in Pennsylvania, the United Kingdom and Latin America.
