BACK- GROUND: U.S. nuclear plants conduct graded, full-scale emergency exercises every two years. During these exercises, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) evaluates the performance of the nuclear plant and the Federal Emergency Management Agency evaluates the performance of the participating state, county and municipal emergency management agencies. The NRC previously evaluated PPL's Susquehanna nuclear plant in 1997. Because of changes in NRC procedures and schedules, the 1999 exercise was postponed until this year. The next exercise will be in 2002 and future exercises will be held in even numbered years. The Susquehanna plant, located in Luzerne County about five miles north of Berwick, is owned jointly by PPL Susquehanna, LLC and Allegheny Electric Cooperative Inc. and is operated by PPL Susquehanna. PPL Susquehanna, LLC is a subsidiary of the PPL Corporation (NYSE: PPL) family of companies.
