Michael E. Bray, who has led PPL Corporation's (NYSE: PPL) electric and gas distribution subsidiaries for three years, today (8/22/03) announced his intention to retire.

Bray will be replaced by John F. Sipics, who began his PPL career in 1970 and has served as an officer of the corporation for six years. Currently, Sipics is vice president-Asset Management in PPL Electric Utilities, with responsibility for planning, regulatory activities and community development.

"We thank Mike for his leadership in the establishment of PPL Electric Utilities as a separate PPL subsidiary and his commitment to outstanding customer service and operational quality," said William F. Hecht, PPL's chairman, president and chief executive officer. "We wish him well in his retirement."

"We are very fortunate to have someone of John Sipics' experience to step into this important role. John has extensive background in all aspects of the electricity delivery business and also spent some time as president of our natural gas delivery company," said Hecht. "We are very confident that, under John's leadership, PPL Electric Utilities will continue to be one of the nation's leading electricity delivery companies."

Sipics will take over his new role on Sept. 30.

PPL Electric Utilities delivers electricity to 1.3 million customers in central and eastern Pennsylvania. In his new role, Sipics also will have responsibility for PPL Gas Utilities. The president of PPL Gas Utilities, Robert Geneczko, will report to Sipics.

Bray came to PPL from Consolidated Edison Development, where he served as president and chief executive officer. Prior to his work at Con Ed in New York, Bray worked for General Electric, ABB Power Generation, DB Riley and Long Island Lighting.

Sipics, who joined PPL as an engineer in 1970, worked in a variety of increasingly important positions in the company's generation and transmission planning departments before being named general manager-Power Systems Support in 1994.

He was named vice president of PPL's retail energy supply group in 1997, as changes were coming to the U.S. electricity business. Two years later he was named vice president of Delivery Services and Economic Development in the company's electricity delivery business. In that role, he also served as president of PPL's natural gas delivery business.

Sipics holds bachelor's and master's degrees in electrical engineering from Lehigh University, where he also served as an adjunct lecturer for six years. He is a registered professional engineer in Pennsylvania.

PPL Electric Utilities, which was formed in 2000, is one of the four major subsidiaries of PPL Corporation. The others are PPL EnergyPlus, which markets wholesale and retail electricity; PPL Generation, which controls more than 11,500 megawatts of electricity generation capacity in key U.S. markets; and PPL Global, which operates electricity distribution systems in the United Kingdom and Latin America.
