HAWLEY, Pa.

PPL Corporation has begun a series of scheduled water releases from Lake Wallenpaupack to improve boating and other recreation on the Lackawaxen River in Pike County, Pa.

The first water release was July 7. Five additional releases are scheduled for each Friday starting July 16 and ending Aug. 13, provided that water is available. The releases will begin between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. and will continue for about five hours. Exact times will be available a week prior to the release by calling 1-800-807-2474 or visiting PPL's Web site at http://www.pplweb.com/ilwpk/cgi-bin/expected_generation.pl.

The releases will provide enough water for good boating and rafting conditions on the Lackawaxen for the day.

"We recognize that Lake Wallenpaupack is an important regional resource for power generation, drought management and recreation," said Brad Piatt, PPL's manager of peaking power. "As operators of the lake, we work very hard to balance these interests to everyone's benefit."

The company met with operators of rafting companies on the river to determine the best amount of flow for river rafting. PPL will use the water to generate electricity before it is released into the river, Piatt said.

Periodic recreation releases from Lake Wallenpaupack will be contained in PPL's renewed operating license with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, Piatt said. PPL has been meeting with local residents, community groups, state and federal resource agencies, and private interest groups as part of the relicensing effort.

The new license would require the recreation water releases to begin next year. The company decided to begin the releases this year as part of its commitment to the communities where it does business, Piatt said.

"These releases will provide benefits to the thousands of people who boat and raft on the river, to the operators of rafting companies, and to the local economy," he said.

Lake Wallenpaupack was built by PPL in 1926 to provide water for the company's Wallenpaupack hydroelectric power plant. The 5,700-acre lake, on the border of Wayne and Pike counties in the Pocono Mountains, is a valuable regional resource for power generation, drought management and recreation.

PPL Corporation (NYSE: PPL), headquartered in Allentown, Pa., controls more than 12,000 megawatts of generating capacity in the United States, sells energy in key U.S. markets and delivers electricity to nearly 5 million customers in Pennsylvania, the United Kingdom and Latin America.
