"By extending its relationship with PENCON, PPL EnergyPlus reaffirms its commitment to helping school districts contain operational costs by providing energy-efficient heating, cooling and lighting systems and a top-to-bottom inspection of energy use in school buildings," said Larry De Simone, president of PPL EnergyPlus.

PENCON, one of the largest nonprofit energy consortiums in Pennsylvania, has 350 members, primarily schools and school districts.

The energy services agreement will provide PENCON members with more opportunities to save money, backed by a guarantee provided under Pennsylvania's Energy Savings Act. The state law allows schools to use savings created by making improvements to pay for the project.

Money saved by improving the energy efficiency of schools could pay for upgrades in heating, cooling and lighting systems.

"PPL EnergyPlus and PENCON have been partners in the deregulated energy market for years and will continue to work together to provide opportunities for schools to save money," said Jeff Kimball, PENCON's president and cofounder.

He said representatives from school districts across the state attend free expos sponsored by PPL EnergyPlus to learn how to reduce their energy and operational costs.

"During this next phase of our relationship, PPL EnergyPlus will provide opportunities to help schools maintain aging buildings, create comfortable classrooms that improve the learning environment and cut their energy bills," Kimball added.

As part of its commitment to education, PPL EnergyPlus will continue to contribute to the PENCON Foundation, which provides money for scholarships and other educational programs.

"Support of the PENCON Foundation is a fundamental part of our commitment to help school districts meet more than just their energy needs," De Simone said.
