The company received the award because of its innovative and creative success in promoting landfill gas-to-energy projects as well as other methane- based fuel projects. Notably, PPL's GenSelect(SM) program began the placement of a dozen methane-driven microturbines earlier this year at the Allentown wastewater treatment plant.

The Allentown wastewater treatment plant produces about 80 million cubic feet of waste methane every year. The use of microturbines could save the City of Allentown approximately $150,000.

"I think this award shows our commitment to pursuing the use of renewable energy," said Bill Brensinger, PPL senior environmental professional. "This is one of the first steps the company has taken to find financial and environmental value in renewable energy sources."

According to the EPA Web site, landfill gas is "an ideal fuel source with a multitude of uses. Many of these uses and technologies have emerged recently and show promise as viable alternatives or compliments to traditional uses of landfill gas."

The national award was presented to PPL on December 11, at the EPA's Landfill Methane Outreach Program Conference and Project Expo. In addition to the "Energy Ally of the Year", EPA presented awards for Industry Ally of the Year, State Ally of the Year, Landfill Methane Outreach Program, Partner of the Year, and Project of the Year.
