School students in Maine could soon be learning more about restoring Atlantic salmon, thanks to a special workshop at PPL Maine's Milford hydroelectric plant.

Teachers who attend the Oct. 25 workshop will be involved in discussion and interactive role-playing as they look for ways to integrate the Penobscot River Restoration Project into their curricula.

"We're thrilled that PPL is sponsoring a workshop that will provide educators with information that shows how the restoration project will be important to the cultural, economic and environmental climate of the area," said Laura Rose Day of Penobscot Partners, the coalition that supports the project. "The teachers will then be able to share this information with their students, who are Maine's future leaders."

The project is part of an agreement between PPL Corporation and a group of government agencies, private groups and the Penobscot Indian Nation to improve access to over 500 miles of river habitat for Atlantic salmon and other migratory species.

Under the agreement, the coalition would pay PPL about $25 million to purchase three of the company's dams in Maine and then either remove or bypass the dams to help restore runs of the fish to the Penobscot River. PPL would get the right to increase energy output at its six remaining dams in Maine.

"We're confident this project will help revive the Penobscot Indian Nation's fishing-based cultural traditions as well as enhance emission-free energy generation for Maine homes and businesses," said Scott Hall, manager of environmental services for PPL Maine.

The 4-8 p.m. workshop will feature presentations by Hall, Day, Mary Ann McGarry of the Maine Lakes Conservancy Institute and Catherine Schmitt of the Mitchell Center for Environmental and Watershed Research at the University of Maine. Teachers can register for the workshop by calling 207-827-2247.
