PPL Electric Utilities customers can get rebates on solar panels, heat pumps

PPL Electric Utilities on Thursday (3/4) announced a rebate program to benefit customers who install solar panels or ground-source heat pumps.

“These rebates could be a deciding factor for someone who is thinking of going forward with a solar photovoltaic array or ground-source heat pump project,” said Thomas C. Stathos, director of Customer Programs and Services for PPL Electric Utilities. “We expect there will be significant interest.”

A residential customer can apply for a solar panel rebate of $2 per watt, up to a maximum of $5,000. Governmental and nonprofit customers can receive up to a maximum of $500,000 per customer or parent company. In addition, residential customers can apply for a ground-source heat pump rebate of $217 per ton, up to a maximum of $1,200.

Ground-source heat pump rebates are also available to townships, municipalities and other government and nonprofit customers. These customers are eligible for a maximum rebate of $6,510 per facility (up to a maximum of $30,000 per parent company for companies installing ground-source heat pumps at multiple sites).

A photovoltaic array must be connected to the PPL Electric Utilities system, or a ground-source heat pump must be installed, between July 1, 2009, and May 31, 2013, to be eligible for the rebate program. Customers considering or receiving grants from other programs should check whether those programs contain any restrictive conditions on additional funding.

Rebate program funds are limited, available on a first-come, first-served basis and subject to change. Submitting a rebate form doesn’t guarantee a rebate. Other restrictions may apply.

“We’re encouraging customers to get involved early and submit all the necessary paperwork,” Stathos said.

Customers with solar panels who haven’t already submitted their full interconnection application, including a copy of their certificate of completion, will receive a rebate reservation application.

“Submitting the rebate reservation form will let PPL Electric Utilities know the customer intends to proceed with the project, and we will set aside funds for potential rebates for up to a year,” Stathos said. Rebate applicants should be sure to carefully follow instructions on all forms.

PPL Electric Utilities is contacting contractors in its service territory to spread the word about the rebate program. Customers who already have submitted some or all of their interconnection application paperwork are also being informed about the rebate.

This program is among several within PPL Electric Utilities’ E-power initiatives that offer customers tools, information and incentives to use energy more efficiently, help them save money and reduce their carbon footprint. Other E-power programs, including appliance recycling and discounts on compact fluorescent light bulbs, already are under way.
